A Lump in the Throat...

With an inevitable lump in my throat, I'm posting this press release link from the Department of National Defense (ty Zip re: comments from Small Dead Animals) in support of our troups heading to Khandahar, Afghanistan.

I'm about as emotional as they get, so fighting back tears while I post this is just something that isn't out of character considering the subject matter. Why? Because we have individuals in our military who have deliberately chosen to put their lives on the line to protect our democracy, our laws and us. Yes you and me.

Not only is it our military but anyone who are in positions of danger to protect us, our police officers, fire fighters, emergency crews and yes, including the very much bashed CSIS agents who get their very lives threatened for testifying against terrorists from Afghanistan.

Ignorant and insensitive politicians who think they have Canada's best interest in mind are not thinking about the very reality of the work that goes on "behind the scenes" that we don't know about. Have we been attacked? No? Why is that? Could it be that our security officials are doing such a good job from preventing it that we are able to live our day to day lives to the extent that we don't have to pay attention to these matters?

How many of us have told them we are proud of them? I am. Right here, right now: I'm very proud you!

So where is the media to open up some dialogue that addressess the psychological reaction of Canada's position in Afghanistan, the deaths that may be inevitable or how to address a terrorist attack here if one occurs? Are hospitals, physicians, nurses and social workers ready to address the psychological effects of such attacks? I believe this would give comfort to Canadians and the families of our soldiers to show national support when the real fighting errupts. We are still one country are we not?

Come Rememberance Day, we'll all watch the tableau vivant of an RCMP officer, in a mourning pose, dead still in his red serge and we still wouldn't have realized what our military gives their lives for.
